For us singers to strengthen our own storytelling and interpretation, we need to know who is singing, to whom, and why. We must understand what the song is really about. Only that way can we be genuinely present in the moment.
Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to develop your song interpretation:
Who is singing? Who is the song's "I" or narrator? Is it you, an imaginary character, or someone else?
To whom are you singing to? A loved one, a friend, or perhaps yourself in youth or old days
When and where does this take place? Is there a specific location in mind?
What is the song's core message?
Why was this song written? What is the reason I am singing it right now? What do I want to convey?
If you want to go even further, you can think about following questions:
Does the narrator have hope in the song?
What is the 'turning point'? Is there one?
How does the song's dramatic arc evolve as the piece progresses?
Does my body language support the song's message?
Can the breathing points strengthen the song's story?
Why is it important that you listen to this song right now?
Remember: Select a scenario and a song that won't stir up strong emotions right now. We aim to tell the story confidently and be present in a way that is safe for us. We choose which parts we share about us and it's important to consider your own boundaries while telling your story.
